Traditionally menswear and unisex brand Cassette Playa has branched out into womenswear, although enigmatic designer Carrie Mundane hasn’t sacrificed an iota of her vision in doing so. The London based designer believes that clothing is an extension of the self, the avatar of one’s persona projected into reality – the concept of clothing as a second skin is especially important to her. As a parallel to the Cassette Playa vision, the incorporation of Augmented Reality technology into her runway production brings a whole new level of personality and depth to the collection.

Maison Martin Margiela Men’s S/S 2011 from Purple Magazine on Vimeo.
Although there may have been some doubt as to whether the brand would be able to maintain it’s esoteric identity after the enigmatic Martin Margiela made a complete departure from the house in order to return to painting, this video shows that Margiela hasn’t lost its’ edge one bit.

Moncler Gamme Bleu Spring/Summer 2011 Runway from LAT Videos on Vimeo.
A high velocity presentation at the Milan Velodrome, featuring Montcler’s Gamme Bleu collab with Thom Browne, and inspired by the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia. An ingenious runway concept, a rather handsome collection, and inspired musical choices. A real winner.

There is often more than meets the eye when it comes to well designed shirting – this rich navy ‘Safari’ piece from Norse Projects’ Summer collection is full of small, subtle surprises. Contrasting white buttons, roll-up sleeve detailing, and cheekily designed front pockets make this a clever choice for those adventurous summer evenings that run deep and long. A great ‘everyday’ shirt, and at £80 (approx. $120), a paltry sum for this high quality staple.

A collection with this much color would have been unimaginable just a few years ago for fashion house Jil Sander, but with the departure of their famous founder and the arrival of Raf Simons, much has changed. This collection includes powerful yellows and pinks, as well as belted blazers and funky prints. (definitivetouch)

We’ve never come to expect anything less than the finest in minimalism from Jil Sander, and this upcoming season has delivered on every front. Chunkier footwear styles, with thick soles and hearty construction, are the crux of the utilitarian/militaristic vibe that will dominate the menswear circuit this fall. Functional, elegant leather bags and cases are also on the agenda – nothing groundbreaking, but then again that is just what the industry has been assiduously avoiding.

“With archives spanning over 125 years, the Wolverine 1000 Mile collection is based off reliving the past and its subsequent footwear highlights. The aesthetics as you would imagine lean very much on the side of conservatism, with traditional styles and colors.”
It’s always refreshing to see designers return to their roots – if anything, it’s become a leit motif for the season as labels and retailers alike explore new ways to market themselves more effectively. At a time where quality especially trumps all else, Wolverine has struck while the iron is hot. The collection is indeed conservative, and they’ll last forever – there is a reason it’s called 1000 Mile. With top notch quality and an attractive price point to boot ($235 – $350), they are an appealing buy to be sure.
