I’ll be honest, the only reason this house made it on here is because I like the versatility of the brown PK 22 chair that is used at the desk. Poul Kjœrholm’s chairs are at the pinnacle of modern chair design, but often don’t receive enough recognition, so here’s a little from Adequately Fresh.

This mid-terrace house in Ireland has been extensively refurbished into a contemporary live/work space. The new structure was conceived as a simple form which connects at ground level with the existing house. The tight site and strict planning constraints defined the form of the new extension from an early stage.

In 2012 Copenhagen will get a new bridge connecting Christianshavn and Applebys Plads. Designed by Olafur Eliasson. I actually like the design and think its quite innovative.

The new Facebook headquarters were designed by San Francisco based interior design firm Studio O+A in Palo Alto, California. Although not overly impressive, I would not mind having this as my office space.

The holiday house in located in the middle of the village of Vnà in the Lower Engadine. The particular challenge of the project was to bridge the divide between the old-world charm of the village and the modern flair embodied in a holiday house for an internationally successful art gallery owner. The aim was to develop a formal language which had a certain proximity to traditional Engadine architecture and yet remained immediately recognisable as contemporary without being conservatively romanticised.

“Designed by French architect and winner of the Pritzker Prize, Christian de Portzamparc, the Hergé Museum is due to open on June 2nd of this year. The icon that was (and still is) Tintin played a role in most of our childhoods. Even today Tintin and Snowy are making waves in recently translated Chinese copies in Asia. A stroke of comic-book genius, Tintin evolved from the brush of belgian artist Georges Prosper Remi, or as he is more commonly known, Hergé. Unfortunately the masterful Hergé passed away in 1983 but thanks to the new Hergé Museum in Brussels, its not too late to pay hommage to his work.” via dailyicon

master plan

“Located in the southwestern part of Inner Mongolia, in Ordos City, the Kaokaoshina New District is an emerging art and cultural district organized by Ai Wei Wei. Kaokaoshina is positioned to be a thriving tourist destination, in anticipation, the development calls for a series of villas for people to live and visit to experience this incredibly unique part of the world.

The concept of Villa I is based on a hybridization of the traditional housing of the Mongols – the yurt – and the Chinese – the use of a central courtyard. The yurt is suited for nomadic life, and like the Chinese, Mongols live within the boundaries of a village. Additionally, the experience of building is embodied in three ideas: circulation, metamorphosis and lightness.

The design uses the notion of circulation to choreograph a dance between the person and the building – there are multiple, indirect paths which loop through the building. Along these paths there are a series of arranged social spaces, each offering uniquely framed views of the elements – sky, earth, and water. Villa I is not a single object but rather a space in the process of metamorphosis likened to cellular mitosis. The northern face of the villa is a single vertical rectangle; the shape and proportion of a door. The southern face is two overlapping horizontal rectangles; two giant windows. Tying back to the idea of circulation, the movement throughout the building activates this transformation. Scales and proportions change radically – thus circulation and movement spur the metamorphosis.” (via)

“This eye-catching residence designed by Fiona Winzar Architects is both an interesting study in angles and in eco-friendly building techniques. The home’s unusual feature is a roof extension that is used to provide privacy and shade and mimics the shape of an eyelid — inspiring its name, the Eyelid House. Built for a family of five living in a city environment, the home needed to feel airy and inviting while also incorporating smart eco-friendly features that would have money-saving, energy-efficient benefits. Highlights include preserving the existing building, a rainwater collection system, use of solar hot water, passive ventilation, and the use of materials made in Australia.

The architects were initially confronted with several challenges that resulted from the urban setting, in particular the site is surrounded by taller buildings on two sides which would cause problems for privacy. The “eyelid” of the home proves to be a good solution with practical and aesthetic benefits. The partial roof extension blocks views from the neighboring three-story building while allowing light into the space. To create harmony between the angle of the extended roof and the rest of the home, tessellated plywood paneling is used as a decorative element on many of the walls — which, assisted with a varied palette of building materials, also helped to give the home a more casual and playful atmosphere.” (via)
